FUSE Brings Faith & Environment Together

Fuse A fairly new organization has set up shop in Miami: Faiths United for Sustainable Energy...otherwise known as FUSE. According to their site: "FUSE creates a network of faith communities who agree that energy conservation and supporting the use and development of sustainable energy are moral imperatives and that collective action by faith communities is necessary."

FUSE is organizing two events later this month:

Clean Energy Interfaith Candlelight Vigil
6:30 PM, March 27th, 2008
Senator Mel Martinez’s office (800 S Douglas Road, Coral Gables FL 33134)

This event is part of a nationwide effort by people of faith to show our decision makers in Washington D.C. that we are deeply concerned about the dangerous effects of dirty energy, including climate change, illness, and poverty.

Sea Level Rise in South Florida: Clean Energy Solutions for the Threat of Climate Change
7:00 PM, March 31st, 2008
Temple Beth Sholom (4144 Chase Ave, Miami Beach FL 33140)
This is an educational event that will feature a panel of experts, including Harvey Ruvin and Dr. Hal Wanless, discussing the potential devastation to South Florida caused by rising sea levels due to climate change and will focus on the role that faith communities can play in advancing clean energy solutions.

For more details on either event or to RSVP, please email jesseg@fusenow.org or call 1-866-486-7388.

Repurposed4you.com is looking for "Green" Artists!

JustlogoShelly from Repurposed4You.com recently reached out to say hello to us. This Florida based online store is a web-based gallery of eco friendly handmade goods.  One of their best sellers are the cute Qwerty Magnets, made from keyboard keys. (And she tells me they are way harder to make than it seems!)

They are also looking for more "Green" Artists. Repurposed4You.com is looking for artists that make new and innovative gifts, home décor, art, jewelry and more out of recycled, repurposed and reclaimed materials. They offer it up to the web, all you have to do is make it! If you are interested, please contact Shelly via email.

Veterans & Eco-Entrepreneurs: Otway

Twins. Veterans. Eco-entrepreneurs. Lately if you go to any green event locally, you're likely to meet brothers Russell & Kevin Otway. They've been recently featured in the Sun Sentinel and won 1st Runner Up in an FIU Business Plan Competition. Here is their story as told by Russell Otway:

Logo_2My twin brother Kevin and I have been working towards launching Veterans Energy Solutions, LLC. It is a business that would address the twin issues of energy efficiency (energy auditing) and energy conservation (solar). Consumers and builders/architects would use our service because we can reduce electric energy consumption by 10 - 45%.

We have been researching these fields for about two years starting not too long after I came back from Iraq. And we have trained extensively as well with Solar Energy International (SEI) and the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC).

We are taking a slightly different approach from the norm to the same endeavor as environmentalists by linking our service in the military in order to make energy independence a reality. We have been crafting our plan to that end and have even molded courses taken at FIU to complement our overall understanding. And as a part of that process of crafting and validation, we entered Florida International University's New Venture Challenge Business Plan Competition making it to the final round. And winning First Runner Up!

All too often, we hear the bad side of the Iraq war effort and even recently of injured troops getting bad care, etc. But we have not heard many stories of how troops are coming back and still serving their country with like fervor. And what we do transcends the politics of war. So, we are turning our effort into one of those stories.

We can all commiserate about the bad things that happen as a result of the war but Veterans Energy Solutions is about bringing practical, holistic energy solutions to all residents of Miami-Dade County and beyond.

Green Jobs: Work @ Ecoist!

EcoistEcoist is one of my favorite local green companies. I mean, candy wrapper handbags...how cool is that? The bags & accessories are actually made in places like Mexico (all fair trade, of course!), but the company headquarters is located in the Wynwood Art District. The office is a very creative, fast paced, fun environment.

Ecoist is currently seeking a Fulfillment / Logistics Coordinator & Office Assistant to handle everything from phone calls to inventory. See the complete details on Craiglist or contact Ecoist for more questions or to apply.

Of course, if you're not looking for a job - it's a purse you're after, then I highly recommend checking out the site and going shopping!

Donate Your Fur to the Animals

CoatscubsRag Trade Happy Clothing Co. has teamed up with Coats for Cubs. Bring in your furs during February and March and they will be donated to the Humane Society to help rehabilitate animals. So what exactly happens to the fur? It is used as bedding for animals - but it feels like a surrogate mother.

Stop by Rag Trade (map) to drop off your fur...and shop around a little! We've shopped there and loved it!

Grand Opening: Rag Trade Happy Clothing

Rag_tradeI'm very excited about this. Stephanie at Rag Trade Happy Clothing Co. has contacted us regarding their grand opening this weekend. In fact, we even got to stop by the store "pre-opening" to meet her and check it out.

Rag_pursesThe concept is simple, it's like a vintage or second-hand store, except that you can bring clothes to trade (or for cash). From their website:

Rag Trade is your clothing store of funk & more! You and your friends can bring in your awesome clothes and Rag Trade will buy them from you while you shop for something new. Rag Trade believes in it's ongoing recycling project, saving the environment one pant leg at a time. Rag Trade feels like going thru your best friend's closets. Rag Trade saves you the sifting you do at thrift stores, because we have the sweetest collection right in one place! Located on the corner of NE 2 Ave & 46 Street (Entry & Parking in Rear, 2nd Floor).

Rag_stephOwner of Rag Trade, Stephanie Spiegel, is a recent college grad with big ideas. Expect to see cool things come from her - she really is trying to make Miami a greener place. Make sure you meet her when you stop by the store.

Cool things you should know:

  • All of the price tags are actually promotional flyers that were destined for the trash. (You all know how much I hate that trash...what a great idea. If you can't beat them, make their trash useful!)
  • The prices are super affordable.
  • The location is great, but the entrance is tough to find. Parking and entrance (2nd floor, #6) are in the rear of the building.
  • When you go, bring a bag of clothes to trade! Clothes should be clean and free of holes and sketchy stains.

I'll definitely be checking out the grand opening of Rag Trade this Saturday, January 20th. They will have food, drinks, a bounce house, music and green giveaways from 12 noon 'til sundown. Join me! Map.
