New Green Party Each Friday: 5pm - 2am

This is cool: each Friday night at the Catalina Hotel & Beach Club, Maxine Tower on Miami Beach, there will be a "Green Party"!  The first one starts tonight. Here is the full info as it has been sent to me:

Green_flyer_back_2Swank Entertainment presents...

The Green Party!
Green is the new black!
Friday @ 5pm February, 15th, 2008
At The Catalina Hotel and Beach Club, Maxine Tower
1720 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, Fl, 33139

Long time nightclub legend, Mykel Stevens has teamed up with Christopher McCoy to form Swank Entertainment.  With the current situation of our Environment and a desire to preserve our beaches Swank Entertainment decided to make its first event a weekly Eco event to support the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach.  Representing ECOMB will be the founder, Luiz Rodrigues and last years commissioner of Miami Beach and new member on the board of directors, Michael Gongora.

New VeeV acai spirit will be sponsoring the event with organic drink specials and a complimentary VeeV cocktail with a $10 donation to ECOMB.  That $10 donation will also get you complimentary juice bar and hors d'oeuvre's and entered in a raffle for a designer one of a kind handbag, by Ecoist, made from repurposed candy wrappers.  Ecoist reuses factory discarded misprints and overages that would otherwise end up in landfills.

One Group, Katheryn Rodler an Independent Representative, has also sponsored the event with mens and womens organic skin care, cosmetics and health products to be raffled off at future events.

February, 22nd The Green Party will be having an organic wine tasting, featuring True Earth Wine with a $20 donation going to ECOMB.  Other future events will include live local performances, fashion shows for organic clothing and a monthly Green Pool Party.

Take Everglades Action on Wed, Dec 5

From Jonathan Ullman of the Sierra Club & Build the Skyway:

FlevOn the afternoon of Wednesday, December 5, in downtown Miami, the future of the Tamiami Trail and the Everglades Skyway will be at stake, and we need you there. One day before the 60th Anniversary of Everglades National Park, the Corps of Engineers will show state and federal representatives that its plan for opening up the heart of the Everglades is to do basically nothing (see info below).

I’m asking you to spend a little more than hour of your day on Wednesday, Dec. 5 to be at the Hyatt Regency, 400 SE 2nd Ave. (map) at 2 p.m. and after the Corps’ presentation, speak during the public comment session.

Speak for Florida Bay and the manatees, speak for Everglades National Park and its 68 endangered species, and speak for the water that nourishes them. Our leaders have failed us. Now we must lead.

What: Army Corps of Engineers’ Tamiami Trail presentation to the State/Federal Everglades Task Force

Where: Hyatt Regency Hotel, 300 SE Second Ave., Downtown Miami (map)

When: Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at 2 p.m. (Corps’ presentation scheduled for 2:35 p.m. but it may run early.)

Who: Skyway Coalition members and supporters

Organic Buying Club of South Florida; Event 10/21

OrganicbuyingclubThe Organic Buying Club of South Florida is a topic we still haven't covered here on greenerMIAMI. It's a similar but different concept to a CSA. The organic buying club organizes groups of individuals who are interested in purchasing organic produce, but at a lower cost than we would find in the grocery store. By buying large quantities of organic produce, you can get great food, cheaper.

Every other week members receive 25-35 pounds of fresh, organic, (but note: not local) produce for a fee of $43. Visit their website to learn more (and tell them we sent you!).

If you'd like to meet the people behind the club, join them for their 2nd Annual Bountiful Harvest Celebration at Oleta River State Park on Sunday, October 21, 2007 from Noon to Sunset. Here's what they tell us about the event:

  • Learn why organic food is essential to your health
  • Listen to various authorities on the subject
  • Free 5 minute chair massage, mini-facial and more
  • Savor organic food
  • Bring your entire family; there will be all kinds of fun activities for both adults and kids
  • Organic Fruit Basket Raffle
  • Email them for more info...
